How it works

1Drag the 3D grid to rotate it and get a good view of the battle space.
2Watch the enemy unit (ship, submarine, or plane) glide between points — it never stops moving.
3Use the X, Y, and Z steppers to move your targeting marker to where the unit currently is.
4Press FIRE when your marker lines up with the unit's live position — timing matters as much as the coordinates.

Worked example

A submarine gliding toward (3, -2, -1) is a live target — if you fire while your marker reads exactly (3, -2, -1), it's a direct hit.

Frequently asked questions

Do the units ever stop moving?

No — they glide continuously between patrol points, so you have to predict where they'll be, not just where they were.

What do X, Y and Z mean here?

X and Y are the horizontal map position; Z is altitude — negative is underwater, zero is the surface, positive is sky.

Is there only one shot per target?

Yes, each round is one firing attempt — take a moment to track the pattern before you commit.

For teachers and parents

Standard: The 3D coordinate system and multiplying signed numbers (Common Core, Grades 6-7) (6.NS.C.6, 7.NS.A.2).

In the classroom: Great hands-on intro to 3D coordinates and negative numbers as altitude/depth, beyond the usual flat coordinate plane.

At home: Encourage watching a full patrol loop before firing the first time — spotting the pattern matters more than reacting fast.
